After builders

After builders cleaning, so you can move back in

Plaster dust gets onto every surface, into every corner and back onto the floor you've just swept. A cleaner works through the home room by room until it's gone.

  • Surfaces, floors, skirting boards, doors, sills and fittings
  • Priced by the hour, so a bigger job gets the time it needs
  • Book from tomorrow, once the trades have left

6 hours at £30 an hour. Housekeep's median for the same flat: £284.

Why building dust needs its own clean

The dust from sanding plaster and cutting board is much finer than household dust. It floats, settles on top of door frames and inside sockets, and smears if you wipe it with a dry cloth.

So an after builders clean works from the top down: high surfaces first, then walls, sills and skirting boards, then floors last, with damp cloths that lift the dust rather than push it around.

Included

  • Dust and light debris from every reachable surface
  • Skirting boards, doors and door frames
  • Window sills
  • Light switches, sockets and fittings

  • Floors vacuumed and mopped, in every room

Not included

  • Rubble, offcuts and waste: the builder should take these
  • Paint, plaster or cement splashes
  • Work above the height of a small step ladder
  • Outside windows, gardens and garages
  • Carpet shampooing

Getting the timing right

  1. Wait for the last trade to leave

Painting, flooring and snagging all make dust. Book once the work is finished and the tools are out.
  2. Give the dust a day

Fine dust keeps falling for a day or two after sanding. A clean booked straight after can need doing twice.
  3. Clean before the furniture goes back

Empty rooms are faster to clean and nothing gets dusty again as it's carried in.

Work out the hours

Choose "Needs a lot" if the work covered most of the home or the dust is thick on the floors.

Questions people ask

After the last trade has finished and taken their tools away, and before you move furniture and rugs back in. Fine dust keeps settling for a day or two after sanding and plastering, so leave a gap if you can.

Removing dust and light debris from surfaces, floors, skirting boards, doors, window sills and fittings, room by room. It doesn't include rubble, paint or cement splashes, or taking waste away; the builder should clear those.

It's priced by the hour. A 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom flat in normal condition is 6 hours at £30 an hour, so £180. If the work covered the whole home, choose "Needs a lot" on the quote and the hours go up.

Building dust is slow work: it has to be lifted off every surface, not spread around, and it often takes several passes. The rate reflects that, and the cleaner is paid more for it too.

Some settling is normal for a few days. If an area wasn't cleaned properly, report it from your booking page within 48 hours of the start and ask for a cleaner to come back and put it right, free.
